MARCH 28, 2001 The US Attorney's Office in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday said two former Bureau of Indian Affairs employees were sentenced for their involvement in the diversion of federal funds. Diana M. Smith and Doreen A. Begay were accused of misappropriating $208,421 in funds from the Department of Agriculture's National School Lunch Program. Instead of sending the money to a BIA office, Smith allegedly deposited the funds in a school account at an Arizona bank and Begay allegedly withdrew funds from the account for personal use. Smith pleaded guilty to conspiracy and was sentenced yesterday to 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Begay pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to 120 days of home confinement under electronic monitoring, followed by five years of supervised release. both have been ordered to repay the funds.
