FROM THE ARCHIVE
APRIL 9, 2001 At a freedom of information hearing on Friday, a lawyer for the Eastern Pequot Tribe said the Connecticut town of North Stonington has hired a former Bureau of Indian Affairs researcher who worked directly on the tribe's federal recognition petition. Jeffrey Tobin said Kay Davis is now helping the town challenge his client's petition. According to The New London Day, Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane II refused to confirm or deny the accusation. According to The Norwich Bulletin, Mullane denied hiring Davis. Davis formerly worked in the BIA's Branch of Acknowledgment and Research, the department that handles federal recognition. She previously accused the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe, or forces allied with the tribe, of physically intimidating her and setting up practical jokes for her at the BIA in Washington, DC.
