FROM THE ARCHIVE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001 An official of the Connecticut town of North Stonington on Tuesday said talks with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation over trust land are doomed because of tribal sovereignty. William N. Peterson said federal government needs to reconsider the "stupidity" of dealing with tribes on a government-to-government basis. Unless policy towards tribes is changed, equal rights will suffer, he claims. Fellow John "Mac" Turner said he doesn't agree that talks with the tribe are failed. North Stonington, Ledyard and Preston are challenging the tribe's ability to seek trust lands. The tribe is offering to limit land-into-trust applications to 880 acres for the next 35 years.
