JANUARY 4, 2001

The state of Wisconsin has warned the Oneida Tribe that its gaming compact won't be renewed when it expires in May 2003 if the tribe fails to pay a total of $4.85 million by Friday.

The amount is owed to the state as part of the tribe's compact. But the tribe said it won't pay the money until it has a better understanding of how the money is being spent. The tribe says the money should be spent on tourism and economic ventures.
