Delay on N.M. compacts assailed

New Mexico State lawmakers on Thursday criticized Attorney General Patricia Madrid for failing to make significant progress on new gaming compacts they authorized with the state's tribes.

Madrid wasn't there in person to receive the criticism, which centered on seeking too much interest on $100 million in back payments owed to the state to holding. Chris Coppin, assistant attorney general, however, said the state is resolving a number of issues with tribes.

As a condition to new compacts, the state's tribes agreed pay back more than $100 million owed to the state. Reportedly, Madrid is asking for 15 percent interest but her office won't confirm or deny if tribes are balking at the idea.
