Senate GOP tries to force vote on court nominee
Wednesday, July 30, 2003

Senate Republicans on Tuesday tried to force a floor vote on one of President Bush's judicial nominees but were blocked by a Democratic filibuster.

Democrats are opposing several nominees they consider too conservative for the federal judiciary. Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla R. Owen, up for a seat on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, was at issue yesterday. The 5th Circuit has been negative to tribes in Texas on gaming and sovereignty cases.

Republicans are pushing a vote on Miguel A. Estrada to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears a number of Indian law cases. The court recently threw out contempt charges against Secretary of Interior Gale Norton for her handling of the Indian trust.

Another vote is planned for Alabama's attorney general William H. Pryor to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
