Choctaw Tribe to rebuild chief's historic home
Tuesday, August 19, 2003

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians plans to rebuild the home of Chief Greenwood Leflore, who negotiated the 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek that forced the tribe to remove to Oklahoma.

Not all Choctaws left their ancestral territory. Leflore was one who stayed behind and became a wealthy plantation owner.

Leflore's mansion burned down in 1942 but the tribe has found an original site plan.

The tribe will add a golf course, tourist lodging, a spa and wellness center, a conference center and archeological research center. The project is expected to cost between $80 and $100 million.
