Felon rights issue facing Lumbee Tribe
Thursday, August 28, 2003

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has to decide whether to allow felons the right to serve on boards and commissions.

The Lumbee Supreme Court ruled August 19 that a vote by the tribal council to exclude felons was unconstitutional because it was done by secret ballot.

The tribal council can decide to rehold the vote in public. Some officials say it should be put to a vote before the people.
