Seminole Tribe under heightened scrutiny
Thursday, September 18, 2003

The Seminole Tribe is being investigated by a federal grand jury and the Internal Revenue Service for possibly tax violations, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

Tribal council members doled out millions in tribal funds to tribal members but never paid taxes on the gifts, according to court documents and testimony at a recent federal trial. About $120 million is at issue, the paper said.

The National Indian Gaming Commission and the Department of Interior are also reviewing a casino contract the tribe signed, the paper says. Government officials are worried that the deal is unfair to the tribe.
