Mohawk Tribe protesting state's taxation plan
Thursday, September 18, 2003

The Akwesasne Mohawk Nation of New York is rallying other tribes against the state's taxation plan.

Tribal leaders say the state's effort to collect taxes on the sale of goods to non-Indians amounts to "economic racism." They are hoping to arrange a protest against the plan.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance last Friday said it would begin enforcing a law requiring the collection of gas and cigarette taxes.
