Sen. Murkowski calls for removal of Stevens riders
Monday, October 27, 2003

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she does not support legislative attempts to deny funding to Alaska's tribes.

Murkowski spoke to the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) annual convention on Saturday. She told delegates that she opposed a rider to cut off funding to tribal courts and law enforcement systems.

"I do not believe we should abruptly shift money to the state of Alaska through the appropriations process, especially without any guarantees of how that money will be spent by the state," Murkowski said, according to The Anchorage Daily News. "We need to alter the course the current justice riders are taking us down."

Stevens, the state's senior senator, spoke to AFN on Friday and defended his record on Native issues. He wants to change how tribes receive federal funds. Native leaders see the push as a threat to their sovereignty.
