Calif. officials trying to shut down tribe's business
Monday, November 3, 2003

State regulators in California are trying to shut down a tribe's business because they say it skirts workers' compensation laws.

The Blue Lake Rancheria operates Mainstay Business Solutions as a staffing company. According to The Palm Springs Desert Sun, Mainstay hires another businesses' employees and then leases them back to the original employer while providing coverage similar to workers' compensation.

With the cost of workers' compensation insurance skyrocketing in the state, Mainstay provides a cost-effective solution for businesses. But state regulators say the practice is illegal, and is cracking down on customers who use the tribe's services.
