Editorial: 'Doubletalk' on Indian health care
Thursday, November 20, 2003

"Claude Allens visit to Window Rock was supposed to be a celebration of relationship building between the Indian Health Service, the United States and the Navajo Nation.

The celebration will be short lived if his comments about the future of health care spending are any indication.

Allen, deputy secretary with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said he hadnt heard about a report from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that pointed out the Indian Health Service was being shortchanged.

The report notes the average cost of health care for Americans in 2003 was $5,775 per person. It also detailed how the federal government pays an average of $3,803 in health care costs for each federal prisoner.

Yet the amount spent on health care for the Navajo was as little as $800 per person."
