Survey shows improvement among Indian youth
Thursday, December 11, 2003

Surveys from the Montana Office of Public Instruction show that Indian students are taking fewer risks, becoming better students and staying out of trouble.

The results of the Youth Behavior Risk Survey were released in July. They were taken among high school students on the reservation and in urban areas.

The results show improvements in a number of behavior categories. For example, drinking and driving dropped 39 percent between 1993 and 2003 for reservation and urban Indian youth. More than half of urban Indian students are above-average students, and nearly half on the reservation are above-average.

But in many cases, Montana Indian students were engaging in more risky behaviors than the U.S. student population as a whole.
