Panel endorses tribe's entertainment district
Thursday, January 29, 2004

Protests by Palm Springs residents didn't stop a city panel from unanimously approving the Agua Caliente Tribe's plan to create an entertainment district.

The 3 1/2-hour meeting was emotional, according to news reports. Opponents said the tribe's was being given "open-ended" approval to do whatever it likes within city limits.

But the land is owned by the tribe and held in trust. The tribe is working with the city and says it will seek individual approval for any development going forward. The tribe envisions hotels, a theme park, condominiums, restaurants and possibly a casino.
