FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2002

Members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut will vote for a new chairman on Sunday.

Former chairman and current vice-chairman Richard "Skip" Hayward is running to regain the top slot. He led the tribe from obscurity in the 1970s to financial prominence as owner of the largest casino in the world.

Council treasurer Michael Thomas is also running. He is described as more conservative than Hayward.

Outgoing chairman Kenneth Reels supports Thomas.
