South Carolina lawmakers were warned that fake Indians are trying to get federal recognition and money, The Myrtle Beach Sun News reported.

The Catawba Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in the state. A new bill would provide assistance to those seeking federal status.

A Catawba tribal member and a representative of the Midlands Intertribal Empowerment Group said the bill would only help fake Indians. According to the paper, the number of groups claiming Indian ancestry has grown from six to 18 in the past decade.
