FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2003

An Alaska Native regional corporation is seeking to obtain title for lands it is promised under federal law.

But Sealaska's push for certain forest lands is upsetting tribal members. The company wants land around a Tlingit village called Hoonah and near Hydaburg, a Haida village. Tribal members oppose Sealaska's logging practices.

Sealaska is in talks with tribes, environmentalists and the U.S. Forest Service about its plans. The corporation, which is not a tribe, has 16,000 Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian shareholders.
