NOVEMBER 17, 2000

A two-day syposium of the attack on a Cheyenne village on the Washita River begins today in Cheyenne, Oklahoma.

A Commanche elder who remembers the role his tribe played in helping defend the Cheyenne from the Army will speak today at the event. Commanche warriors surrounded a detached crew of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's calvary and killed them.

The battle took place on November 27, 1868. Custer's calvary attacked the camp of Cheyenne Peace Chief Black Kettle.
