Haskell students complain about highway

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2001

Students from Haskell Indian Nations University on Wednesday aired their complaints about a proposed highway that would run through wetlands considered sacred and where past students are probably buried.

The Kansas Department of Transportation held its first ever meeting with Haskell students. The students said the state says it wants to listen but doesn't understand why they oppose the highway.

The state is proposing an alternative that it hopes will not impact the wetlands.
