NOVEMBER 20, 2000

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho are helping once extinct salmon return to their native waters.

The tribe uses a technique called supplementation to help boost runs of coho and chinook salmon. Supplementation involves releasing fish born in hatcheries into rivers as juveniles, in anticipation they will return as adults to spawn.

The tribe has counted almost 2,000 coho salmon, once considered extinct, that have returned to Idaho rivers to spawn.
