Tribes threatened in Colombia
MAY 14, 2001

Colombia's Indian tribes are fearing loss of their culture, language, and way of life due to violence which has already cost the lives of hundreds of tribal members.

Leftist rebels have taken over parts of northern Columbia, putting Indians to work for their cause. Guerilla groups on the other side often respond by killing entire villages.

Of the country's 84 tribes, about 30 are considered endangered, says the Indigenous Organization of Colombia. Land invasions, oil development, and violence threaten the lives of the tribes, the group says.
