FEBRUARY 13, 2001

The New Mexico Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday passed a non-binding resolution supporting the negotiation of new gaming compacts with tribes in the state.

Governor Gary Johnson yesterday also said he might begin negotiations. The tribes are currently being sued by Attorney General Patricia Madrid for refusing to pay a 16 percent revenue sharing fee to the state as required by compacts signed in 1997.

Some tribe have endorsed a proposed compact which would reduce the rate to a maximum of 8 percent and require them to make back payments but with half of the proceeds earmarked for Indian education. Other tribes haven't agreed to those provisions, however.
