Bush tries to 'work' on vacation

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001 Worried that frequent vacation trips are giving off the impression that he is slacking off, White House officials have scheduled lots of "work" for President Bush during his one-month holiday at his Texas ranch. Yesterday alone, he had a meeting with some of his top officials, spoke on the phone with national security advisor Condoleezza Rice and took a walk. Since journalists aren't allowed near the ranch and Bush isn't talking to any, the American public has to rely on the word of White House press officials for Bush's actions. According to The Washington Post, Bush has spent 42 percent of his tenure at vacation spots or en route. White House officials did not dispute the calculation. Get the Story:
