OCTOBER 25, 2000

The city of La Crosse, Wisconsin, held a meeting to help decide on the future of a statue depicting an Indian.

Many said the Hiawatha statue, which was erected in the 1960s, is a racial stereotype. One person wondered why no statues are made of Indians with doctorates.

The 15-foot, 20-ton statue is in need of repairs.
