APRIL 23, 2001

Members of the Bush administration on Sunday defended recent environmental decisions but sent out conflicting messages on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska.

On "Face the Nation," Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman said there is not hard push to drill in the refuge.

A couple of hours later on "Late Edition," Secretary of Interior Gale Norton said the administration is definitely pushing drilling big time and doubted media reports that suggested otherwise.
