MAY 30, 2001 A panel of scientists and federal officials on Tuesday advised Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) to focus global warming studies on the Arctic but he says he still hasn't decided if the condition exists at all. "I don't endorse or denounce the concept," said Stevens as reported by the Anchorage Daily News. "I'm still in the process of finding out what's going on." Caleb Pungowiyi, president of a nonprofit foundation established by the Alaska Native NANA Regional Corp. testified at the Senate hearing yesterday, saying that Arctic villages are already seeing the effects of climate change.
