JUNE 6, 2000

Native groups and churches facing mounting lawsuits over their participation in residential schools are urging the federal government to consider a "truth and reconciliation commission" as a way of easing strain and potential backlash.

The total number of suits against the federal government now stands at 5,900. Bob Nault, Indian Affairs Minister, said abuse lawsuits are coming in at a rate of 20 per week.

Many churches have said they are near bankruptcy.
