MAY 18, 2000

The state of Vermont will work with Abenaki leaders to protect Abenaki remains recently uncovered on private land. A court had ordered a couple to stop construction on their house. Vermont law makes intentional removal or excavation of human remains a felony punishable by up to 15 years and a $10,000 fine

The state hopes they can come to an out of court settlement with the couple. The state in the past has purchased parcels of land that contain Abenaki remains.

After some Abenaki left some tobacco at the site to honor the dead, the couple accused them of littering and trespassing.
