Several tribes in Wisconsin are seeking off-reservation casinos and are seen as a test to the Department of Interior's procedures for taking land into trust and approving casinos near communities who may or may not want such development.

The Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe have shopped their casino proposal around to several communities. They recently chose Shullsburg in Lafayette County as a potential site, promising $4 million a year for 20 years.

Three Ojibwe tribes are seeking a casino in Hudson. The plan has come under fire by local communities and other tribes and was rejected by the Interior in 1998.

A 30-day comment period on reconsideration of the casino ends this week.
