Faith-based bill delayed

MARCH 14, 2001

Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa) on Tuesday said he would delay bills implementing President Bush's controversial faith-based initiative.

Santorum said he would split his bill into two parts. One would address charitable choice, which provides tax incentives in order to encourage charitable giving.

The other, and more controversial, would address expanding federal funding to religious organizations. The White House has come under fire for this proposal as critics charge it will blur the line between church and state, dilute religion, and fund discriminatory groups.
