Cherokee group seeks recognition in own state
Friday, January 31, 2003

The "Lost" Cherokee Nation of Arkansas and Missouri is seeking recognition by the state of Missouri.

A state lawmaker introduced a bill so that tribal members can label their arts and crafts as Indian made. The Indian Arts and Crafts Act, which is aimed at stopping fake Indian art, applies both to state and federally recognized tribal members.

The bill specifically disavows any other rights to the tribe, such as gaming and smoke shops.
