Nez Perce Tribe vows to stop housing near cemetery

The Nez Perce Tribe denounced a decision last week that allows a housing development near an historical tribal cemetery in Oregon.

The tribe said Wallowa County commissioners ignored the law and public interest in protecting Old Chief Joseph's gravesite. The site is the start of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail that the Nez Perce followed to avoid being rounded up by the U.S. Army and forced to a reservation. The chief's son, Chief Joseph, led his band on a 1,500-mile journey that ended near Canada.

The commissioners called for another archaeological study before 11 homes are built on 62 acres near the gravesite.
