Indian complaints prompt voting rights initiative

Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) has started a voting rights project in response to problems Indian voters faced in a recent election.

Indian voters helped elect newcomer Stephanie Herseth (D) to the House. But some said they were turned away from the polls due to a state law that requires photo identification. Poll workers failed to offer an alternative for those without ID, activist said.

Daschle set up a hotline, 1-866-213-5200, and a webpage www.tomdaschle.com/votingrights in an effort to educate voters about their rights. The project is part of his re-election campaign.

Daschle also has asked Secretary of State Chris Nelson to hold hearings in Indian Country on the problems.
