Ione Band, Chevron sue city to stop sale of land

The Ione Band of Miwok Indians and ChevronTexaco filed suit in hopes of stopping the city of Richmond, California, from approving a land deal that would benefit a rival tribe.

The Richmond City Council is scheduled to vote on a $50 million agreement to sell a 354-acre former Navy fuel depot to Upstream Investments LLC. Upstream is working with the Guidiville Band of Pomo Indians to open a casino on the property.

But the Ione Band says the Guidiville Band doesn't belong in the Bay Area. An Ione leader was quoted last week as telling the Guidivilles to "'go to where they were from."

ChevronTexaco owns the land surrounding the former depot and says the city failed to offer the land up for public use.
