Federal officials allow ceremonies at Shasta Dam

The Winnemem Wintu Tribe of California has been given a special permit to hold ceremonies at the Shasta Dam.

Federal officials initially balked at the request because the tribe wanted to start the ceremonies on the day before September 11. But tribal leaders agreed to start the following day and end four days later.

The tribe is holding the ceremony to protest the proposed raising of Shasta Dam's walls. Tribal members say their sacred sites will be flooded.
