The union behind a challenge to tribal sovereignty has poured nearly $100,000 into a campaign opposing the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians' zoning plan in Palm Springs, California.

Donations from the Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE) lead the fight against the tribe, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. The campaign seeks to overturn the city council's approval of the tribe's development plan.

HERE is challenging the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians over unionization at the tribe's casino. The National Labor Review Board overturned 30 years of precedent and said on-reservation businesses that impact non-Indians are subject to labor laws. HERE is also fighting the Agua Calientes on casino issues.

Measure U appears on the November 2 ballot and gives voters a chance to weigh in on the tribe's zoning plans. The Agua Caliente Band has spent more than $205,000 on ads.
