Man admits lying in bid to gain federal recognition

The former leader of a group called the Western Mohegan Tribe and Nation of New York pleaded guilty on Friday to falsifying documents in connection with his bid to gain federal recognition.

Ronald Roberts, 56, also known as Sachem Golden Eagle, admitted falsifying his grandfather's death certificate and altering a 1845 New York state census.

Separately, Roberts admitted to falsifying information in a 1996 bankruptcy filing. He used his son's and others' Social Security numbers in court.

The Western Mohegan group is not state or federally recognized. The group has filed a land claim in several counties.
