Si Tanka University files bankruptcy papers

The troubled Si Tanka University in South Dakota filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday in hopes of protecting its on-reservation campus.

Si Tanka has defaulted on $6.6 million worth of loans and faces a $2 million federal tax lien over financial problems at the off-reservation campus in Huron that has since been closed. Foreclosure proceedings could be initiated.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has acted to dissolve the Huron campus in order to qualify for federal funds reserved for Native students. Si Tanka's acquisition of the former Huron University caused Native enrollment to drop below 50 percent.
