'Warriors' not an option in university mascot vote

Students and alumni of Marquette University in Wisconsin will vote on 10 possible nicknames for the school but "Warriors" is not among the choices released on Monday.

Write-ins will be accepted -- but not for "Warriors," school officials said. The school's policy forbids the use of Indian-related imagery.

"Warriors" has been a popular choice among students and alumni. But area tribal leaders oppose the name. The school used to have a "Willie Wampum" Indian mascot that was eliminated in 1971 and later replaced with a "First Warriors" mascot.

The school called the vote in response to uproar over choosing "Gold" as a nickname earlier this month.
