Morongo Band determined to keep kids in school

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians unveiled its new educational center on Thursday.

The 4,320-square-foot Morongo Learning Center is part of the tribe's effort to improve education for tribal members. It will house the Morongo Tutoring Program, which provides tutoring to students, and the Morongo Alternative Education Program, which offers independent study for those seeking their GEDs.

Chairman Maurice Lyons said the tribe has reduced dropout rates and increased test scores. He said the tribe will eventually open its own school.
