Few Natives receive money for residential school abuse

Less than $1 million has been paid to Natives who suffered physical, sexual and emotional abuse at government residential schools in Canada, CBC News reports.

Only $934,740 was distributed to victims under the Alternative Dispute Resolution program. But nearly $34 million was spent to administer the system, which was meant to speed up abuse claims.

More than 13,000 former students have filed claims through the ADR system but fewer than 1,300 cases have been resolved. The Assembly of First Nations and the Canadian Bar Association have made separate proposals to scrap the program and offer lump-sump payments.
