Ohlones in California gather to promote culture

The 12th annual Gathering of Ohlone Peoples was held on Saturday in Fremont, California, in an effort to promote Ohlone culture and heritage.

An estimated 5,000 Ohlones live in California today. They belong to 25 tribes, many of which are not recognized by the federal government.

The Amah Mutsun Tribe is one seeking acknowledgment. The tribe has an application pending before the Bureau of Indian Affairs but allegations of forgery and fraud have been raised.

The BIA previously rejected the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe's application, the only time the agency has ruled on a California tribe.
