The Bureau of Indian Affairs has extended the public comment period on the Oneida Nation's land-into-trust application.

The comment period was due to close today but it was extended by two months at the request of local officials and politicians.

The tribe has asked for 17,000 acres it owns in two counties to be placed in trust. The application came after the U.S. Supreme Court said the tribe can't "unilaterally" revive its sovereignty without going through the land-into-trust process.

The tribe has since proposed agreements to pay back property taxes pending the BIA approvals.
