Oglala Lakota man takes hemp case to appeals court

Alex White Plume, the vice president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, is headed to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to defend his right to grow hemp.

Plume says the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and tribal law authorize hemp on the reservation. But the Drug Enforcement Agency claims the plant is no different from marijuana, an illicit drug.

The court will hear arguments in the case on December 12. The hearing takes place in St. Louis, Missouri.
