Tribe's treatment as state draws opposition

A Wisconsin tribe's request for treatment as state status is drawing opposition.

The Lac du Flambeau of Lake Superior Chippewa is seeking authority under federal law to develop its own water standards. The federal courts have upheld the sovereign right of tribes to be treated the same as states.

The Environmental Protection Agency opened a comment period on the tribe's request but has extended it another 30 days. State officials and Rep. Mark Green (R-Wisconsin), who is running for governor, say people need more time. Local officials are opposing the tribe's request.
