Law firm takes $10M to fight tribe's land claim

A law firm has collected more than $10 million in taxpayer fees to fight a land claim on behalf of a First Nation in British Columbia, The Vancouver Sun reports.

The Woodward & Company's bills are being paid by the government because the Canadian Supreme Court has ruled that indigent First Nations can receive public funding. The Xeni Gwet'in First Nation is trying to reclaim more than 1 million acres.

Some lower court judges have questioned the high cost of the case. The fees are expected to top $15 million once it ends.
