Northern Cheyenne Tribe meets with museum

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana and the Western Heritage Center met for four hours on Wednesday to discuss an exhibit the tribe says was developed without its consent.

Last December, the council passed a resolution denouncing the American Indian Histories Project exhibit. They said the tribal government should have been more involved in the depiction of Northern Cheyenne history, including the imprisonment and escape of tribal ancestors at Fort Robinson in Nebraska.

Both sides are now working to smooth over the dispute. At least one council member, after viewing the exhibit, said the tribe was depicted accurately.

The tribe is now going to review a DVD and other materials to decide whether to support the project, funded with more $3 million in federal grants. All of the state's tribes are to be included in the exhibit.
