North Dakota tribe considers new constitution

The Three Affiliated Tribes, also known as the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, is considering a complete overhaul of its constitution.

The rewrite has been in the works for more than two years. It would officially change the tribe's name to the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, ensure tribal members have the right to free speech, freedom of religion and other protections and reorganize the tribal government into three independent branches.

The constitution will go before the tribal council in April, with the hope that tribal members will vote on it by September.
