Tribal applicants to state Board of Higher Education

The former chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the current president of the Cankdeska Cikana Community College are among the applicants to the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

The eight-member board has two open seats. Eleven people have applied, the Associated Press reports.

Charles Murphy served as chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe until last year. Cynthia Lindquist Mala, the college president, is the former director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.

The board currently doesn't have tribal representation. Back in December 2000, the board voted to keep the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota, a public institution.
